Dear Marvin,

What’s going on? I was thinking about you today, on this day when you were taken from this world, but I know you are enjoying the upcoming festivities for your birthday tomorrow with all those soul legends up there in heaven. If I may, I want to take this time to tell you how much your music has meant to my life. You probably don’t know this, but those times when I needed to understand my place in the world, I played your What’s Going On? album, over and over again.

There’s a place that your music takes me when I’m feeling introspective. You know, I have to tell you that I chuckled when April 2, 2002 came around and my mom was teasing me about possibly having my oldest son on your birthday, but instead my little big man graced this world two days later, still no doubt a result of your love songs.

This time of the year brings me to a place where I can’t help thinking of your music and the spirit that lives within your songs. I admire the honesty that you’ve shared in your music and I am so grateful for the influence your music has had on the man that I am today.
